A Letter To My In-Laws

Thursday, January 15, 2015

On June 14, 2014, I married my best friend. He is funny, adventurous, and kind. He shows me grace in more ways than I deserve, but he wasn't born that way. He was born an adorable, slightly chunky, and happy little baby from what I have heard, but he was not born a man.

Yesterday was his birthday. His 21st to be exact. 21 years ago, he was a tiny and vulnerable little baby with so much to learn. He was innocent and impressionable, and wasn't yet aware of how harsh life could be. Today, however, I see a man before me who is everything I could have ever dreamed of. He didn't become this way on his own, and today I would like to thank the two people who brought him into this world.

Thank you for celebrating all of his birthdays with him before I even knew his name.

Thank you for every time you kissed and doctored a scraped knee.

Thank you for the times you listened to what he needed you to hear, and for your endless prayers that you might have whispered for him during sleepless nights in a nursery or in the line at the grocery store.

Thank you for teaching him respect and gratefulness, and for showing him the grace and patience that he now shows me.

Thank you for letting him be a boy and play in the mud.

Thank you for letting him be silly sometimes, and for leading him in truth always.

Thank you for teaching him how to treat women, and for praying for his wife while he was still in diapers.

Thank you for showing him what a loving and beautiful marriage looks like, and most of all, thank you for giving him to me so I can now celebrate each and every birthday with him.

Happy Birthday Gabriel!
And to my in-laws, thank you.
